Mid Intermediate – Smart Decisions & Adaptability
Welcome to the Mid Intermediate stage! If you’ve reached this point, you should have a good grasp of early fundamentals, including farming, rotations, and avoiding common mistakes.
Now, we’ll build on that foundation with better decision-making, counter-building, macro play, and role-specific responsibilities.
You should aim to reach Epic rank before starting this stage. Epic rank is where the real game starts. Luckily, you must be ahead of your peers already by following this guide!
Hero Selection & Drafting Smarter
At this stage, you should start picking strategically rather than just choosing your favorite hero.
🔸 Understanding the Meta
In Mobile Legends, meta (Most Effective Tactics Available) refers to the best and most powerful strategies, heroes, and playstyles at a given time. The meta shifts with game updates, buffs, and nerfs. The meta might also vary in different regions or servers.
Why Does the Meta Matter?
- Some heroes are stronger than others due to recent patch notes (updates).
- Pro and high-rank players influence the meta by showcasing which heroes dominate games.
- Knowing the meta helps you pick strong heroes and ban the most dangerous ones in ranked matches.
Tip: Even if a hero isn’t meta, you can still play them if you’re skilled and experienced with them. However, if you're struggling to climb ranks, it helps to pick heroes that are currently strong.
🔸 Draft Pick Awareness
- Learn at least 2 heroes from 2 different roles – Ranked mode now uses Draft Pick, so you must adapt when needed.
- Check your team’s composition – Try to fill missing roles instead of locking in a hero instantly. If everyone picks selfishly, your whole team suffers.
- Communicate during the pick phase – Discuss roles, bans, and picks. A well-balanced team has a higher chance of winning.
- Some effective bans in Epic rank include – Johnson, Saber, Miya, Yin, etc.
Basic Itemization – Building Smarter
Building the right items at the right time can make or break a match. If you didn't already know, you can buy and sell items in the shop despite it not being in your pre-selected build.
🔸 Build Based on Enemy Damage Type
- If enemies are mostly Physical → Prioritise Physical Defense (Antique Cuirass, Blade Armor, Dominance Ice, etc.).
- If enemies are mostly Magic → Prioritise Magic Defense (Athena’s Shield, Radiant Armor, Oracle, etc.).
- Don’t build Physical Defense against a Magic-heavy team and vice versa!
🔸 Essential Counter Items
- Item (who should build) – Short description
- Dominance Ice (MUST-HAVE for Roamers & Tanks) – Reduces enemy healing & attack speed.
- Wind of Nature (Marksman) – Use against burst Physical damage (Assassins/MMs). Note that WoN doesn't work against magic damage!
- Athena’s Shield (Anti-Burst Magic Defense) – Best against burst damage Mages (Nana, Eudora, Kagura, etc).
- Radiant Armor (Anti-Poke Magic Defense) – Best against Mages with slow damage over time (Zhuxin, Chang'e, Lylia, etc).
- Glowing Wand (Mages) – A must-buy for most Mages due to its burn effect and anti-healing.
- Antique Cuirass (Fighters/Tanks) – Counter against Physical skill-based damage dealers.
- Blade Armor (Tanks) – Counters attack-speed-based Marksmen (e.g., Miya, Melissa).
- Demon Hunter Sword (Marksman) – Counters enemies with huge HP, basic attacks deal extra hp-based damage.
- Sea Halberd (Physical Damage Dealers) – Reduces enemy healing (use if laning against Esmeralda, Alucard, etc.).
Macro & Micro Play – What They Mean
🔸 What is Micro?
Micro refers to individual mechanics – how well you control your hero, land skills, dodge attacks, and outplay enemies.
Your micro with a hero or role increases with experience and time. Always read and understand the skill descriptions of the heroes you play.
🔸 What is Macro?
Macro refers to overall game strategy – how well you rotate, take objectives, position in fights, and control the map. Macro can be learned at any stage unlike micro which requires experience.
A player with good micro but bad macro may have great mechanics but makes bad decisions, while a good macro player knows how to win even without flashy plays.
Macro Play – Game Sense & Decision Making
🔸 Gold Management & Farming
- Last-Hitting Minions for Maximum Gold
- Minions grant more gold if you land the last hit.
- This is how you gain advantage against your enemy in laning phase.
- Efficient Gold Distribution
- Prioritize farm for your carries – Don’t take jungle/minions from your Marksman or core heroes.
- Gold Lane has the highest income – If you win lane, pressure the enemy and rotate to help teammates.
🔸 Map Awareness & Rotations
- Always check the minimap every few seconds – Try to track enemy positions.
- Try to gank the gold lane as many times as possible. Starve their gold laner and make yours fed.
- Being your team's gold laner, be wary that enemy will try to do the same.
- Move with purpose – If enemies are missing, don’t overextend.
🔸 When & How to Take Objectives
- Turtle is very important! Exp laner should help the Jungler take Turtle if possible.
- Lord should only be taken if you have a lead (numbers advantage or farm advantage).
- If behind, apply split-push pressure instead of forcing a losing teamfight.
🔸 Positioning & Peeling for Teammates
- What is peeling? – Protecting your carries (Marksman/Mage) by keeping enemies away.
- Tanks & Fighters should peel for their damage dealers in teamfights.
- Don’t let assassins dive your backline uncontested.
Role-Specific Macro Tips
At this stage, you should be learning how to play your role properly.
Roamer (Tank/Support)
- Your job is to provide vision, set up fights, and protect teammates.
- Rotate constantly – Don’t stay in one lane too long.
- Use bushes wisely – Don’t walk in blindly; use skills to check, unless your team is following nearby.
Mid Lane (Mage/Support)
- Clear the mid wave, then rotate to help other lanes.
- NEVER sit under turret after clearing the wave!
- If the Roamer isn’t ganking, help Gold Lane first. Even lowering enemy gold laner's HP is enough!
EXP Lane (Fighter/Tank)
- Try not to die too many meaningless heroic deaths in laning phase. Avoid unnecessary fights.
- Help your Jungler with Turtle if it’s nearby.
- Watch the minimap & assist fights if they happen nearby.
- If your team is full of squishy heroes, build at least 1-2 defensive items.
Gold Lane (Marksman/Some Mages)
- Your job is to farm and get gold quickly.
- Avoid fights early unless you have a lead.
- Position safely – Don’t get caught while farming.
Jungler (Assassin/Tank/Fighter/Mage)
- Farm efficiently, but don’t ignore lanes.
- Gank when an opportunity appears, but don’t overforce fights.
- Secure objectives (Turtle/Lord) at the right time.
Expanding Your Hero Pool
At this point, you should start experimenting with different heroes to understand their strengths and weaknesses.
- Try the weekly free heroes in custom or classic mode to get a feel for different playstyles.
- Understanding other heroes makes it easier to counter them.
- Experience will teach you how to react against different matchups over time.
Summary
- Drafting with a team-oriented mindset – Learn 2 heroes from 2 different roles.
- Counter-building – Adjust your items based on the enemy team.
- Better macro play – Improve map awareness, rotations, and objective control.
- Role-specific responsibilities – Understand your role’s job in the game.
- Playing & learning different heroes – Gain matchup knowledge.
Don't worry if this feels like a lot— you don’t need to master everything here to reach Legend. Take your time and focus on improving step by step. Soon, these skills will feel natural!
Once you feel confident in these areas, aim to reach Legend rank before moving to the Late Intermediate stage!
